Center for spiritual formation

Welcome to the
Center for Spiritual Formation

The purpose of the Center is to help people grow in their faith and calling in the world through deepening their inner life with God.

Colonial Church is called to a vision of spiritual formation in all its ministries and activities. We understand spiritual formation as the process of a community being formed in the image of Christ for the sake of the world. Growing in Christ involves both the inner life of faith and the outward life of service to others.

The Center’s purpose is to help integrate this ministry of formation into the life of the church by offering opportunities for spiritual growth, prayer, study and reflection.

We also wish to reach out to anyone in the community who desires a deeper relationship with God and the opportunity to learn about or experience silence, solitude, the classic Christian spiritual disciplines, or the ministry of spiritual direction.

The Center is located at the covered bridge entrance to Colonial, first door on the right as you enter the building. The director of the Center is Rev. Gary W. Klingsporn, Ph.D., a member of Colonial’s pastoral staff. For more information, call Mary Werness in the church office at 952.925-2711.

Lectio Divina & Centering Prayer

Lectio Divina & Centering Prayer

Thursdays, 6:45 – 8:00 pm, Center for Spiritual Formation

Lectio Divina and Centering Prayer are two ancient Christian prayer forms built on listening to God. Many have found comfort and new life perspectives in joining others in the quiet candlelight to listen to a short line of Scripture followed by silence to rest in God’s presence. Hospitality at 6:45, prayer at 7:00. Dick and Carolyn Young lead. Questions? Contact them at 952.893.0673.

Personal Retreats

By appointment. Loft of the Center for Spiritual Formation

Amid our busy, stress-filled lives and the difficult experiences we encounter, retreats are refreshing opportunities to step back and take time to reflect. The Center for Spiritual Formation, located a the Covered Bridge entrance, offers three small retreat rooms in the upper Loft for time to read, journal, pray, nap, and reflect. Take time for a few hours or a whole day; arrange a guided retreat; or meet with a minister or spiritual director as part of your retreat. Call Mary Werness, 952.224.9522, to schedule a retreat room; no charge, but donations are welcome.

Spiritual Direction

Center for Spiritual Formation

One of the classic Christian spiritual disciplines practiced in the Church for centuries, spiritual direction is a ministry that allows people to ask, “Where is God in my life?” Reflecting on your faith journey with a trained mentor/guide helps you listen for God, deepen your prayer life, and reflect on relationships, faith and values. Although spiritual direction is typically a fee-based service, our spiritual directors are offering one-time sessions with no fee requested. If interested in a complimentary session, please call Janet Hagberg, 612.296.3376; Joan Velde, 952.944.8448; or Tracy Mooty, 952.944.0242.
